Would you like to work at Birka Viking City? Here we present our available jobs and volunteer opportunities.
Are you fascinated by the Viking Age and eager to learn more? Do you enjoy meeting new people? Would you like to spend part of your summer in one of Sweden’s most unique cultural and scenic environments – also a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Then you’ve come to the right place. We are now looking for committed individuals who want to help us make Birka come alive for our visitors.
As a volunteer, you will become an important part of the experience at Birka. You won’t just be surrounded by history – you will help bring it to life. Dressed in Viking Age clothing, you will meet our guests, spread joy, and make both children and adults feel welcome. You will host activities and games for visitors, support the craftsmen, and help care for the animals.
We are looking for volunteers who are social, curious, and enjoy talking to people. You should have a strong interest in the Viking Age and historical reenactment. If you already practice a craft, that’s wonderful – but the most important thing is a willingness to learn. You need to be able to speak and understand English, and knowledge of a Scandinavian language is a plus.
What do you get in return?
You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Birka’s history and archaeological site, as well as Viking Age craft techniques, together with our experts.
You will become part of a wonderful team of passionate people on a magical island with vast burial grounds, ancient fortifications, and beautiful nature. Here, you’ll have the chance to log out of social media, turn off your phone, and instead live close to nature and in the present moment.
Volunteers stay in shared rooms together with staff in a modern house equipped with a kitchen, showers, and toilets. Breakfast, a simple lunch, and dinner (traditional Swedish home-style meals) are provided. We also offer free travel to and from Birka with Stromma’s boats from Stockholm, Mariefred, Södertälje, and Härjarö.
We are looking for volunteers who can stay with us for at least one week and up to four weeks during the period from early May to the end of August.
Are you ready to join us on a journey through time?
Send us a personal letter telling us about yourself, why you would be a great fit as a volunteer at Birka, and the dates you are available. Email birka.museet@stromma.se
