Birka Historical Tattoo Fest

Get tattooed on Birka May 18-21, 2023

We are happy to announce that our dream of a tattoo event at Birka is coming true. Welcome to the Birka Historical Tattoo Fest on May 18-21 2023. Here you will meet 20 world artists from the historical, Nordic, Celtic, Baltic and ornamental tattoo scenes, working with various historical and electric methods.

During the event, you will also meet Vikings, be able to buy replicas and historical crafts, divine yourselves in runes and listen to historical folk music by @dajogniaband and @medvind_musik.

Boat trip from Klara Mälarstrand, Stockholm

Price: fr. SEK 495 (Children 6-15 years: Half price, children 0-5 years: Free)

Taxi boat from Hovgården, Adelsö

Price: SEK 300 (Children under 15 years: free)

The ticket prices include a return boat trip with arrival and departure at your own choosing between 11:00-20:15, entrance to the museum, a guided tour of the archaeological site, and performances.

Tickets for the taxi boat cannot be pre-booked. They are purchased on board and can be paid by card or swish.

Rastaholm Hostel

Not far from Birka across the lake is Rastaholm Hostel. M/S Mälar Victoria that departure Stockholm stops here on its way out to Birka.

Bring own sheets and towels. There is a sink in the room and a shower and toilet in the corridor. There is also a shared kitchen for easier cooking and breakfast. The kitchen is equipped with a coffee machine, fridge, stove with oven and microwave. Car parking is available.

Book tickets with M/S Mälar Victoria from Rastaholm to Birka: stromma.com  
Start by choosing the date, then choose Rastaholm jetty.

If you want to stay longer at Birka than 15:30 when M/S Mälar Victoria departs, there will be a smaller boat to Rastaholm departing from Birka at 18:30 and 20:00 every evening (Saturday also 23:00)

Camping at Birka

There will be an area for your modern tent at Birka between May 18-21, with access to toilets and showers. Price SEK 100/person per night, to be paid in the museum on arrival.

Report the size of the tent (2-person tent, 4-person tent, etc.), number of people, and which dates you plan to spend the night to birka.museet@stromma.se

Bring everything you need and breakfast, there is no grocery store on the island. Keep in mind that it can be cold at night in May. There will be coffee/tea, sandwiches, drinks, buns, ice cream, snacks and sweets to buy at the museum from 10:00. Restaurant Särimner is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to late on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Saturday evening it’s a Feast in Restaurant Särimner with musical entertainment and a fire show. Tickets for that can be bought in the restaurant until 16:00 the same day, price SEK 350.
