The Dog – The Viking's Best Friend!

august 8-9 2026

A weekend packed with something extra for everyone whose heart beats for our four-legged friends! The event is organised in collaboration with the Swedish Icelandic Sheepdog Club and Kennel Sangilak.

Throughout the weekend, you can meet Icelandic Sheepdogs in the Viking Quarter, chat with their owners, and learn more about the breed’s history and its connection to the Viking Age. Archaeologist and museum educator Linda Wåhlander will be on site to talk about archaeological finds of dogs from the Viking Age and how they are mentioned in Old Norse literature. The programme also includes herding demonstrations, a dog parade, a cuddle-and-petting area, and a quiz walk for both people and dogs. Naturally, we also offer guided tours of Birka’s archaeological site and visits to the museum.
